Maya Calendar Energies At Work In The World

The last trecena before spring, the last trecena in the current 260 day cycle, with a crescendo on the final day – we are set to undergo some significant transformations! This is the trecena that serves to herald change prior to the beginning of the new cycle, often with an emphasis on “leadership”.

One Rabbit (the Aztec variant of the first day of this period) was thought to have been the date in the distant mythic past when the cosmos was created by the gods. Its importance is reflected by the inclusion of a One Rabbit glyph on a number of monuments and markers, such as the back of the Aztec Coronation Stone.

This energy (known as One Lamat, aka “Star”, to the Maya) was also associated with New Fire ceremonies. A kind of overlap between these cultures can be seen in the fact that Aztec priests conducting New Fire ceremonies (every 52 years) would climb the Cerro de la Estrella (Star Mountain) to conduct New Fire ceremonies in conjunction with the rise of the Pleiades. And although such ceremonies are no longer conducted, it is intriguing to see how so many events associated with renewal have just “naturally” coincided with this energy, at the beginning of this final trecena within the 260-day Tzolk’in cycle.

Even now, the first day of this trecena is coinciding not only with a Full Moon, but also with Purim, a celebration of deliverance in the Jewish calendar, and with Holi, an Indian festival of renewal that symbolically celebrates the triumph of good over evil. At the same time countries worldwide are celebrating the historic High Seas Alliance agreement that has just been reached to protect the world’s oceans, as a turning point related to the future of this planet.

One Lamat, associated with Venus, was seen as the great celestial “signaller”, an energy that often heralds the need for alertness – as things are in the process of change. One of the major patrons of this trecena was known to the Aztec as Xipe Tótec, the ancient Lord of Renewal and Liberation. The other was Xiuhtecuhtli, the Lord of Fire and Time – a deity connected with time-related change, as in cycle endings. Both of these entities are oriented around the idea of setting the stage for new beginnings. Sudden and dramatic change is not unusual during this period, particularly with regard to conflicts, and with regard to individuals in leadership positions.

Adaptation of the Lamat (Star, Rabbit) trecena from the pre-Columbian Codex Borgia by artist Richard Balthazar (used with permission). The first day (One Lamat or One Rabbit) is represented by the little head of a rabbit at the lower left (within the border). The other days of this trecena proceed from there to the right, and then up towards the top, to the stylized flower (Ajaw) at the upper right. The daysign numbers pertaining to this trecena (beginning with One Lamat) are not shown, but implied. The patron deities associated with this trecena are Xiuhtecuhtli, the Lord of Fire and Time (the large image on the left) and Xipe Tótec, the ancient Lord of Renewal and Liberation (the large image on the right).

It has now been three cycles since Joe Biden’s inauguration as the 46th President of the US on the fifth day of this period in 2021, after four years of “spiritual decay and moral decrepitude” fomented by his predecessor (as Harvard professor Cornel West put it), compounded by the mess of the coup attempt, and the “Big Lie” rantings of someone who could not comprehend the concept of a “peaceful transition of power”.

Six cycles before that (in 2016) this trecena sent out all sorts of warnings to the world to “get ready” for the monumental changes that were about to unfold, particularly with regard to the then-forthcoming U.S. presidential election. Conflicts within the Republican party were already emerging as Trump “declared war” on House Speaker Ryan and the GOP establishment, which cowered. One cycle after that, in 2017, this trecena brought forth massive protest demonstrations in dozens of US cities, in a huge call for the dumpster’s impeachment, with marchers’ signs signalling sentiments such as “Illegitimate, Corrupt Puppet”, and “Worst President Ever”.

During the following cycles many departures from the White House occurred during this period and there were a number of huge protest demonstrations, such as the National School Walkout Day protest in March of 2018 that called for tougher gun control laws. Later that same year, Democrats began preparations to resume control of the US House of Representatives during this trecena, with 102 newly-elected women, just after the mid-term elections.

In the deeper past this is the trecena that was in place in 1918 when Russia’s Czar Nicholas and his family were executed by Bolshevik troops, at the beginning of this time period, after being removed from Imperial power and held in captivity for several months. Thirty-five years later this energy brought forth the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, on the first day of the same trecena that saw the coronation of Queen Elizabeth I in 1559 (the two coronations were only five Maya calendar days apart).

Seven years after Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation that same One Lamat energy saw John F. Kennedy give his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention (1960) after winning the Democratic nomination for president. Fast forward to 2013 and we find the inauguration of Pope Francis I on One Lamat, in an open air mass in St. Peter’s Square with heads of state and religious leaders from 132 international governments or organizations in attendance.

In terms of this trecena as a whole, this is a time period that has precipitated a number of important “world shifting” events in the past, including the discovery of gold in California in 1848; the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, followed by the unconditional surrender of Japan at the end of World War II; the passage of the Civil Rights Act in the U.S. in 1957; the first major Greenpeace event, in 1975; the completion of the deconstruction of the Berlin Wall in 1990; the storming of Baghdad by U.S. forces in 2003; and the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2014.

Three cycles ago, as Joe Biden began his presidency, the pandemic was surging, and over 200,000 new cases a day were being registered in the U.S. By the end of the trecena the global number of cases had reached over 102 million, with over 26 million in the U.S. Fortunately, the situation has abated significantly, after worldwide vaccination programs were introduced, but over those three cycles worldwide cases surged to over 680 million, with over 6,800,000 deaths (with over 1,140,000 in the US alone).

One cycle ago this trecena not only brought forth the “bombshell” overturning of “Roe vs. Wade” by the US Supreme Court, which traumatized millions, but also brought forth some of the most “eye-opening” testimonies in the Jan. 6th Committee’s public hearings, which vividly provided insight into the inner workings of the insurrection scheme, including the involvement not only of the “former guy”, but also of many GOP members who aided and abetted the coup attempt. With all that information now in the hands of the DoJ’s Special Council, people are now eagerly waiting to see how this will be followed up by the justice system – hopefully there will be some movement in that regard as we go through this transitional zone.

As this trecena begins there is much going on as the political jousting continues, as significant lawsuits evolve, and as this planet continues to grapple with issues such as climate change, social and political unheavals, and wars. As Ukraine continues to repel Russian forces, even in the heavily beseiged city of Bakhmut, NATO countries are in the process of sending artillery reinforcements to further assist the defence.

Although no one can tell what will happen next, there will be some powerful energies in play, not only because this IS a transitional period, but also because the numerical powers associated with this time frame will be doubled, as the numbers associated with the daysigns are mirrored by the numbers related to the month. We are now working with the energies of the month known as Kumk’u, traditionally associated with abundance, with the first day being 1 Lamat 1 Kumk’u, the second day being 2 Muluk 2 Kumk’u, and so on. With this paralleling of the numerical forces as the energies of this powerful, renewal-oriented time frame work in conjunction with the energies of Kumk’u, we will be building up to a “double 13” on the final day. But this will be a very auspicious final day. As noted below, this particular 13 Ajaw 13 Kumk’u energy was seen by the Maya as a notably significant period-ending. So this would be a good time to be highly alert to whatever is happening.

This is also a particularly good time to set the stage for personal new beginnings, an excellent time to work with this trecena’s energies to “signal” your intentions as you work to make whatever adjustments might be needed to address the shifting new realities. This is a great time to work with those “deities of renewal” who oversee this trecena – the Lord of Renewal and Liberation and the Lord of Fire and Time – who will be helping to set the foundations for the changes that will come. Here are the energies that will be in place at this time:

1 Lamat 1 Kumk’u (March 7th) – the “initiation of leadership”, a heralding type of energy that can point towards change or new directions, as could be seen in the distant past when this day (known to the Mexica as One Rabbit) often coincided with New Fire ceremonies, associated with renewal. But even in contemporary times many important events associated with new beginnings have taken place on One Lamat, as seen three cycles ago when preparations were being made under this influence for Joe Biden’s inauguration as the 46th President of the US. Currently this is coinciding with the Full Worm Moon.

This energy has often been an important marker point in terms of leadership in world history. George Washington was selected to become the Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army under this influence in 1775, and Queen Elizabeth II’s elaborate coronation took place under this influence in 1953 – echoing the fact that the Aztec version of this energy (known as One Rabbit) was carved into the Aztec Coronation Stone. In 1960 this was in place at the time of John F. Kennedy’s acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention after winning the Democratic nomination for president, and in 2013, One Lamat brought forth the inauguration of Pope Francis I.

In July of 1918 the tail end of this energy, into early-next-morning, accompanied the brutal assassination of Czar Nicholas and his family by Bolshevik forces in Russia, bringing an end to the three-century-old Romanov dynasty.) The last time this was in place Israel’s coalition government was dissolved, and a new election was called, setting the stage for the return to power of former prime minister Netanyahu several months later. (Given the intense protests now taking place against him, with demonstrators calling him the “Crime Minister”, it could be that some other significant shift in that regard could take place once again during this period.)

Currently this is the 58th anniversary of “Bloody Sunday” in Selma, Alabama, when (in 1965) the 25 year old activist John Lewis led over 600 protesters across the Pettus bridge, in what was intended to be a peaceful demonstration in support of voting rights. However, the violent assault on demonstrators by state troopers made this a key turning point in the civil rights movement in the U.S. This anniversary was marked two days ago (on Sunday) when President Biden visited the bridge to pay tribute to the heroes of that day and renew his pledge to continue the fight for voting rights.

One Lamat is the Maya birth energy of philosopher, political activist, and social critic Cornel West who has often spoken about the massive “spiritual meltdown” taking place in the U.S., which he sees as a massive collapse of spirit, of morality, of integrity, with its accompanying “poverty of imagination” and “poverty of vision”. His advice is “Don’t get discouraged. Bear witness.”

Currently this is the full day of Purim, one of the most joyous holidays in the Jewish calendar. It is seen as a celebration of deliverance that commemorates the saving of the Jewish people from Haman, an official who was planning to kill all Jews in the Old Persian Empire. This festival is in honour of the “miracles” of Purim that were involved in the saving of the people.

This evening also marks the beginning of India’s highly revered Holi festival. Sometimes referred to as a “festival of love” or “festival of colours”, Holi is a time when people get together to play with vibrant colours in the interest of fun, healing, fertility, and renewal, as they forget about resentments and bad feelings from the past and symbolically celebrate the triumph of good over evil. During this evening large bonfires will be lit across India to drive away evil spirits.

2 Muluk 2 Kumk’u (March 8th) – the “dynamic shape-shifting” energy of water, coinciding at this time with India’s full day of Holi, the “festival of spring” or “festival of colours”, marking the beginning of a new season. The coloured powders that are flung around at this time have different meanings: red for love and fertility, green for new beginnings, yellow for happiness and peace, pink for good health, blue for calmness, orange for courage, purple for wisdom. This is actually celebrated in many parts of the world, so have fun everyone!

This is also International Women’s Day, a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. This is a “call to action” day for accelerating women’s equality, with this year’s theme being “Embrace Equality”.

International Women’s Day 2023 “Embrace Equality

The last time this was in place the Jan. 6th Committee was holding its fourth public hearing, which focused on the dumpster’s alleged efforts to unduly influence state legislators and election officials. Georgia secretary of state Brad Raffensperger and one of his top aides were called in to testify.

Forty-six years ago this was the Maya calendar energy in place at the time of the sudden death of Elvis Presley in mid-August, 1977, which came as a great shock to a whole generation of his admirers. Four days from now Austin Butler could win an Oscar for Best Actor for his outstanding portrayal of Elvis, in 2022’s eponymous movie of his life, a movie that was released one cycle ago as of 5 Eb’.

3 Ok 3 Kumk’u (March 9th) – a Burner Day representative of the “activation of fire” (or heart-fire), coinciding at this time with World Kidney Day, which emphasizes communication on how to prolong longevity and live well through effective management of the disease, with this year’s theme being “Kidney Health for All”.

It seems that this “activation” energy may be bringing more storm systems to California by this time, with potentially more snowfall and even an atmospheric river.

In 1954 this was the energy in place when the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the Soviet Union passed a decree to hand over the Crimean peninsula to Ukraine.

This was Nelson Mandela’s Maya birth energy, and the Maya birth energy of Argentinian surgeon Rene Favaloro, the doctor who performed the first bypass surgery, changing heart treatment forever.

4 Chuwen 4 Kumk’u (March 10th) – a “defining” day associated with creativity (and sometimes mischief); a “time-weaver” type of energy that can be quite eventful, coinciding at this time with the opening day for the 10-day SXSW (South by Southwest) conference and festivals in Austin, Texas – a diverse conglomerate of events dedicated to “helping creative people achieve their goals”, through a multi-track conference and festivals that “celebrate the convergence of tech, film, music, education, and culture”.

This tends to be an energy that can “weave events together” in often unusual ways. Three cycles ago this was the last day of what many refer to as “the worst presidency in history”, as factcheckers have reported that the dumpster told an average of some 4,000 lies per month during his time in office, with the biggest of all being the BIG one about the results of the 2020 election.

This marks three cycles since Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock were certified as the winners of the Georgia Senate elections, which gave the Democrats control of the Senate in Washington, making it evenly split, giving Vice-President Kamala Harris a tie-breaking vote, whenever needed. So far she has used it 29 times, the same number of times as John Adams during the 18th century. In May of last year she cast 4 tie-breaking votes, setting an all-time record for tie-breaking votes in a single day (on 13 Lamat).

That was the day (in January, 2021) when then President-elect Joe Biden held a lighting ceremony at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, just before he was sworn into office, in memory of the 400,000 people in the U.S. who had died from Covid by that point. Since then that number has climbed to over 1,140,000 in that country alone (close to 7 million worldwide).

This is David Bowie’s Maya birth energy.

5 Eb’ 5 Kumk’u (March 11th) – a “precision” type of energy associated with restorative vitality, coinciding at this time with the third Gregorian anniversary of the World Health Organization’s declaration of a global pandemic over the coronavirus, when it called for governments to take “urgent action”. The last time this energy was in place (last June) major protests erupted in many parts of the US after the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade in a 5-4 ruling, ending a 50-year constitutional right that allowed women to make their own decisions about their own bodies. It was seen as a “decision heard around the world”.

This was the Maya Calendar energy in place in January, 2021 at the time of the inauguration of Joe Biden as the 46th US president, and Kamala Harris as the first female Vice-President, with rays of sunlight coming through to illuminate them, on what was the 60th Gregorian anniversary of the day when Pres. John F. Kennedy took his oath of office in 1961 as the 35th president. That was when President Kennedy gave his famous “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country” speech.

That day, when Joe Biden became the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, was a Maya Calendar anniversary of the energy that was in place in 1775 when George Washington formally received his commission as Commander-in-Chief of the army during the Revolutionary War (after being selected for this on One Lamat).

It has now been one cycle since the release of Baz Luhrmann’s new “Elvis” movie, which has received 8 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor. This movie has already received many significant awards. Tomorrow we shall see how many Academy Awards it will win.

Currently this is the 12th Gregorian anniversary of the day in 2011 when a 9.0 earthquake struck Japan off the coast of Sendai, NE of Tokyo, triggering a devastating tsunami.

6 B’en 6 Kumk’u (March 12th) – representative of “personal authority everywhere”, at the beginning of Daylight Savings Time, on the day of the 95th Academy Awards ceremony in Hollywood.

This marks the third Gregorian anniversary of the day in 2020 when the United States and many other countries began shutting down and stocks began plunging. It also marks three Tzolk’in cycles since President Biden unveiled a comprehensive Covid strategy, the day after he assumed office. On that day he also signed 10 more executive orders and invoked the Defense Production Act in order to increase the supply of vaccine-related materials and ramp up testing. In addition, this marks seven cycles since Vladimir Putin was re-elected in Russia, for his fourth term, in 2018. Since then many who have attempted to oppose him have either died mysteriously (often by falling from windows) or been subject to severe persecution – in addition to the thousands (including tens of thousands of Russian and Ukrainian soldiers) who have lost their lives due to Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

At this point it has been nine cycles since a monumental climate change deal was finalized under this influence by nearly 200 countries at the UN’s 24th Climate Change Conference in Katowice, Poland (in 2016).

7 Ix 7 Kumk’u (March 13th) – a “self generating transformation” type of energy – exactly eight cycles since protesters across the U.S. in dozens of cities held massive rallies, calling for the dumpster’s impeachment, in the summer of 2017. As it turned out, they finally got their wish – TWICE, but it took much too long to get there – and, unfortunately, was not adequately supported by Republicans. And now he’s trying to get back in?????

This is Commonwealth Day, observed by the 54 diverse member countries in the Commonwealth of Nations who cooperate within a framework of common values and goals. This year’s theme is: “Forging a sustainable and peaceful common future”. The 22nd Commonwealth foreign affairs ministers’ meeting is being held in London at this time.

This is also the third Gregorian anniversary of the day when Canada first went into lockdown, and the 10th anniversary of the day when Pope Francis was elected in a papal conclave.

8 Men 8 Kumk’u (March 14th) a “resurrection” type of energy associated with the high vision of the Eagle, marking four cycles since UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a statement where he said that the coronavirus pandemic has been unleashing “a tsunami of hate and xenophobia, scapegoating and scare-mongering”, as he appealed for “an all-out effort to end hate speech globally.” At that time Guterres called on political leaders to show solidarity with all people, and on educational institutions to focus on digital literacy at a time when extremists were seeking to prey on captive and potentially despairing audiences. Unfortunately that “all-out effort to end hate” did not take root, and the legacy of that tsunami is still being felt.

9 Kib’ 9 Kumk’u (March 15th) – an expansive, “restoration of order” type of energy, sometimes associated with making “adjustments”, often with long term implications, coinciding at this time with World Consumer Rights Day and 26th International Day against Police Brutality. It has now been one cycle since ex-White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson (aide to Chief of Staff Mark Meadows) gave a terrifying first hand account of the situation in the White House before and during the attack on the Capitol, including the conversations that she heard, which confirmed that Trump not only knew what was going on regarding the attack, but encouraged it, and would not do anything to stop it, even though he was urged to do so.

In Roman times this day (March 15th) was known as the Ides of March, and was seen as a day for settling debts. In 44 BC this was the Gregorian day when Roman general Julius Caesar was assassinated at a meeting of the Senate. It was said that as many as 60 conspirators were involved in the plot, with the assassination taking place not long after Caesar was declared “dictator in perpetuity” of the Roman Republic. Fears among the Senate that Caesar planned to claim the title of king, overthrow the Senate and rule as a tyrant, were thought to be the principal motives for his assassination. Seen as a skilled but ruthless military commander, he had greatly expanded the reach of the Roman Empire, but had many enemies.

Comet relating to the Ides of March, painting by Edward John Poynter (1883) in the Manchester Art Gallery. Public Domain. Caesar was assassinated a few months before the comet, but the comet came to perihelion (closest approach to the Sun) during this trecena at that time (in 44 B.C.). It was interpreted by many Romans as a sign of the deification of Caesar. It is now called Caesar’s comet, and seen as one of the most famous comets of antiquity,

This is the Maya birth energy of Maria Branyas Morera, who celebrated her 116th birthday on Mar. 4th . She was declared the world’s oldest person on Jan. 19th. This would have been Chief Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s 90th Gregorian birthday. If she had lived longer it is pretty well certain that Roe vs Wade would not have been overturned.

10 Kab’an 10 Kumk’u (March 16th) – a foundational type of energy associated with the earth and evolutionary movement, coinciding at this time with National Panda Day, one cycle since Sweden and Finland were formally invited to join NATO.

Ten Kab’an was the energy in place in 1917 at the time of the October Revolution in Russia – when the Communists (Bolsheviks) came to power. This energy was also in place at the second inauguration of President Lincoln, in 1865, at which time he said: “With malice toward none; with charity for all…let us strive on to finish the work we are in…to do all which may achieve and cherish a just, and a lasting peace, among ourselves, and with all nations.” Compare that to the 10 Kab’an day in 1973 when the first Watergate hearings took place as major insights into Republican chicanery during the Nixon era began to be revealed.

This is the Maya birth energy of Dr. Joseph Kinyoun, the American physician who founded the Hygienic Laboratory, from which the National Institutes of Health evolved.

11 Etz’nab’ 11 Kumk’u (March 17th) – an “inspirational flint” (knife-edge) type of force that can be quite decisive, dazzling and attention-getting, coinciding with St. Patrick’s Day, and the conclusion of the 67th session of the Commission on the Status of Women at the UN (CSW67). This is also World Sleep Day (although this is more of a “wake up and pay attention” kind of energy rather than being conducive to restful sleep). In addition, this is Red Nose Day in the UK, a major fund raising day through comic relief, at which time people wear red noses, give special performances, and raise funds for charity.

St. Patrick’s Day card 1916

In 1921 this was the energy in place at the time of the Tulsa race massacre, when mobs of armed white residents attacked black residents and citizens, killing 3 dozen people. Two cycles ago all sorts of information came out during the Jan. 6 select committee hearings with regard to the widespread nature of the plot to overturn the US 2020 election. Currently this is marking 800 days since the Jan. 6th attack on the Capitol.

In 1325 this energy was in place at the time of the founding of Tenochtitlan, the axis of the Aztec empire. In 1944 an attempt was made to assassinate Hitler under this influence (one of 3 such attempts that year); and in May of 1968 some of the worst fighting during the crisis in France took place, as students calling for radical change took over the Paris Stock Exchange, raised a communist flag over the building, and tried to set it on fire. Given the current civil unrest in France over the issue of raising the pension age, it is likely that sparks will be flying again in that country at this time.

But one of the most definitive examples of the potential impact of this “knife edge” energy could be seen last year when the US supreme court sided with Republican-led states in their effort to hobble the federal government’s ability to tackle the climate crisis, when they opted to support West Virginia’s position that the EPA should not be allowed to regulate the amount of pollution that can be produced by companies responsible for gas emissions. This was seen as a landmark moment in conservative ambitions to dismantle the “regulatory state” by stripping away protections from Americans across a wide range of areas – a ruling that could have profound implications for the government’s overall regulatory power.

In a whole other area, it was a young Elvis Presley who provided the sparks in 1955 when he gave his first professional performance under this influence in his hometown of Tupelo.

During the summer of 2012 Venus achieved her greatest brilliance under this influence in conjunction with an “extreme” X1.4 solar eruption.

12 Kawak 12 Kumk’u (March 18th) – the “gathering storm/catalyzation” type of energy that can provide a final big PUSH toward enlightenment, marking 7 cycles exactly since the massive “March for Our Lives” demonstrations in Washington and other major cities in the spring of 2018, when some two million people marched across the U.S. in the “largest student protest in American history, one of the largest marches on Washington in history, and the second largest march in American history, with millions more estimated to have marched throughout the world” in support of gun control legislation.

This is rock musician Prince’s Maya birth energy.

13 Ajaw 13 Kumk’u (March 19th) – “transformational Full Sun”, a day often filled with high drama and great change – and sometimes even great light (enlightenment), at the conclusion of the Imix to Ajaw cycle, now marking the tenth Gregorian anniversay of the inauguration of Pope Francis I. It has also been three cycles since the 2021 inflection point when GM announced that they will stop selling gas-powered cars by 2035 and will go carbon neutral by 2040.

In 1945 this was the energy in place at the time of the jubilant celebration of VJ Day at the end of World War II after the unconditional surrender of Japan. This is also a Tzolk’in anniversary of the awarding of the contract for construction of the Space Shuttles Atlantis and Discovery in 1979.

And on a completely esoteric note, this day marks 11 Calendar Rounds (11 x 52 years) since the 13 Ajaw 13 Kumk’u day in 1541 that was thought to be a ritually significant cycle completion date for the Maya, marking an important period-ending. Normally 13 Ajaw is an important Tzolk’in cycle completion date, but this is a special Calendar Round date as well. The specific coupling of the month component of 13 Kumk’u with this 13 Ajaw day makes this day particularly auspicious. A good day to pay close attention to whatever is unfolding, particularly if it seems “transformational”.
