Maya Calendar Energies At Work In The World

“I’m on a mission” – that seems to be what Mother Nature is saying right now, as crocuses and fresh green shoots push through the earth, buds pop out on trees, and birds start returning to northern climes. The annual herring spawn in the ocean off eastern Vancouver Island is attracting hundreds of seals and sea lions, and tens of thousands of sea birds all jostling for position as they gourge on the ocean’s bounty. These wonderful signs of Spring tie in well with this B’en trecena, oriented around the idea of self determination. And at this time this trecena is also bringing in the Maya New Year, World Water Day, the Jewish celebration of Passover, the beginning of the Christian “Holy Week”, and India’s highly revered Holi festival.

This trecena begins with One B’en, representative of the “initiation” of “self determination”, which kicks off the second 52-day period within the 260 day Tzolk’in. This is a force that often presents itself in bold ways, picking up the banner of authority, so to speak, and pointing towards new kinds of action that will play out over the next 52 day period (4 trecenas). This could be seen clearly in 2018 when this trecena began with a “big bang” as Mount Kilauea on the Big Island of Hawaii shot a plume of ash more than 9 kilometers into the sky. That was a highly visible illustration of the “personal authority” of that mountain, as it sent its “pillar” of fire and ash “sky high”.

Currently it is Fagradalsfjall volcano, about 30 km south-east of Reykjavik in Iceland, that is drawing attention, as this long dormant volcano has suddenly awakened, in its first eruption in almost 800 years. No huge pillars of fire so far but the spectacular rivers of lava and ash will draw much attention throughout this period. Given the nature of this trecena, a huge plume of ash would not be surprising.

Generally represented by robust growing corn, symbolic of strong self determination and “personal authority”, that sense of “strong energy pushing through” is highly representative of both the B’en daysign and this period as a whole. Many “pillar-like” symbols tie in with this idea, as could be seen last year during this trecena when the symbolic nature of statues became the focus of attention during Black Lives Matter demonstrations. One particularly powerful example could be seen in the statue called “A Surge of Power” that was raised in Bristol during this time frame, after the statue of a former slave trader was torn down.

Traditionally the patrons of this B’en trecena were seen as being highly oriented around the idea of cleansing and “purification”, and the shifting of energies to clear out stagnation. Indeed the principal patron of this time period is Chalchiuhtlicue, the Goddess of Running Water, associated with the cleansing waters of the earth. She is sometimes accompanied by Tlazoltéotl, the “Great Mother” goddess who not only represents fertility, but also forgiveness and healing. So there can be some sense of “renewed vitality” coming through this time frame.

Adaptation of the B’en (Reed) trecena from the pre-Columbian Codex Borgia by artist Richard Balthazar (used with permission). The first day (One B’en aka One Reed) is represented by the little reed bundle at the bottom right corner (within the border). Each of the remaining days proceed around the edge from there towards the left, ending with 13 Chikchan at the upper left corner. In the centre on the right is Chalchiuhtlicue, the Goddess of Running Water, sitting on a throne or decorative chair, with her purifying waters flowing around her.

Given that vaccination programs are picking up speed in many places, it may be that, in some areas, people are starting to feel that things can just return to “normal”. It could also be that the strong solar forces of the last trecena have affected some peoples’ brains as millions in the U.S. jumped on planes over the past few days in search of places to “party in the sun”, resulting in a state of emergency being declared in Miami since so many people were completely ignoring health and safety guidelines. With over 30 million cases of coronavirus having been registered in that country, with some 550,000 deaths, and with over 2 million cases of the virus registered in Florida (one of the three highest state-wide totals) such behavior defies all notions of either logic or decency. The term “deadly stupid”, as someone just Tweeted, seems to sum it up. Now, with the B’en trecena coming into place it seems that two options might be possible. One could be that this type of “me first” insanity could be exacerbated, and many more will become ill or die, and the other could be that the “cleansing” aspects of this trecena could click in and people will come to their senses and become part of the solution rather than part of the problem. With almost 12 million cases, and new daily case numbers even surpassing those in the US recently, Brazil is also significantly problematic in this regard. But in that country it is leadership that needs to come to its senses.

Indeed, in terms of leadership, the idea of “standing up for justice and equality” is very much in line with the energies of this trecena – an idea which has often manifested in the past through the “stepping forward” of individuals who reveal themselves to be very much aligned with justice and human rights. It was the first day of this trecena in early January of 1960 when John F. Kennedy announced his candidacy and initiated his campaign for the US presidency. This was also the energy in place in 2011 when President Obama announced that he would be running for a second term as U.S. president. Abraham Lincoln was not only born during this trecena, but the final phase of his funeral events, followed by his interment, also took place during this time zone.

The honoring of important “warriors for justice” often seems to be featured during this period as well, as seen in 2019 with the memorial service and lying in state for Congressman and civil rights advocate Elijah Cummings in Washington, on 6 Etz’nab’, which is the same energy as was in place at the interment of President Abraham Lincoln in 1865. With regard to Elijah’s memorial, Speaker Nancy Pelosi referred to Elijah as a “true master of the House . . . . it is only fitting that he lie in state in the U.S. Capitol.”

On the last day of this trecena last summer Captain Tom Moore was knighted by Queen Elizabeth for raising over £32 million for the National Health Service charities in the UK.That same day brought the deaths of two other heroes – Congressman John Lewis, and the Rev. C.T. Vivian, both passionate civil rights warriors for decades – going all the way back to the 1960’s.

Historically many huge shifts in the balance of power have taken place during this time frame, as when Hernán Cortés and his conquistadores began pushing into the interior of Mexico just over 500 years ago during this period, fomenting the devastating events that dramatically changed the whole of Mesoamerica. Several centuries later this same trecena saw the start of the Mexican revolution when the revolutionary Francisco Madero led strikes to denounce the dictator Porfirio Diaz. In 2007 this trecena was in place when Nancy Pelosi made history by becoming the first woman Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, the highest ranking female lawmaker in American politics. She has spearheaded the passage of hundreds of bills through the House of Representatives, and even though she will be turning 81 on the fifth day of this period at this time, she continues to be a force to be reckoned with in Washington.

As usual, there is much to be dealt with during this period, including the continuing insanity of racial intolerance, as in the recent anti-Asian events. But, as always, people are joining forces to denounce such hatred, and their continuous engagement as warriors for justice and equality is still needed as the battle continues, including the battle against the deadly coronavirus. This period is particularly well suited for the continuation of this battle. Here are the energies that will come into play:

1 B’en (Mar. 22nd) – the “initiation” of personal authority, an important 52-day Shift-point within the 260-day cycle, at the beginning of a time frame that is often associated with some significant form of social or political adjustment, or some important announcement. In early 1960 this was the energy in place when John F. Kennedy announced his candidacy and initiated his campaign for the Presidency. It was also a One B’en day when President Obama announced that he will be running for a second term as U.S. president, in 2011.

Two cycles ago, in the fall of 2019, there was a special Saturday sitting of the UK Parliament, on what was a decisive day for the future of Brexit and the UK as a whole, when MPs approved an amendment that forced Prime Minister Johnson to ask for a Brexit delay. While this was happening hundreds of thousands of People’s Vote campaign anti-Brexit protesters demonstrated outside the Parliament buildings. Nevertheless, Brexit eventually clicked in, at the end of last year, which has led to economic slowdowns in the UK and considerable uncertainty.

World Water Day 2021 coincides with the first day of this trecena, with the trecena’s patron being the Goddess of Running Water.

Currently this is the UN’s World Water Day, which celebrates water and advocates for the sustainable management of fresh water resources. The goal of this day is also to raise awareness of the global water crisis, with this year’s theme being Valuing Water. This even fits in well with the “cleansing” nature of this trecena, tied in with the patron deity noted above.

2 Ix (Mar. 23rd) – a dynamic type of energy aligned with “jaguar” earth mysteries and transformation, coinciding at this time with a National Day of Reflection in the UK in remembrance of those who have died during the pandemic; on this day a minute of silence will be observed at noon and prominent landmarks will be lit up at 8 pm. Virtual choirs and community services will add to the commemorations.

This is Israel’s election day, the fourth to be held in two years, with Netanyahu still trying to hold onto power, even though he is on trial for bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. His challengers are pushing hard at this time to unseat him. This is also the Maya birth energy of António Guterres, the current Secretary-General of the U.N.

In addition, this is National Puppy Day, a day to raise awareness about such things as puppy mills, to help save orphaned puppies around the globe, and to help puppies to find good homes. (Not to be confused with National Dog Day which is in August.)

3 Men (Mar. 24th) – the “activation of Higher Vision”; a Burner Day oriented around
“announcing the fire” at the beginning of the “Eagle” burner sequence, an energy that
sometimes heralds the nature of some important forthcoming event or challenge.

Wake up America! Civilization calls every man, woman and child! poster by James Montgomery Flagg. Public Domain via Wikimedia Commons. This appeared two Calendar Rounds ago, in 1917 – but it seems that, for many, another strong “Wake Up” call is needed!

At this time this energy marks exactly two Calendar Rounds (52 years x 2) since Wake Up America day in April of 1917, designed to boost recruitment for World War I, and celebrated by a parade in New York. It would seem that another Wake Up America parade might be in order to wake people up to the fact that, with over 30 million registered cases of Covid-10, and a death toll over 550,000 in that country (by far the highest in the world, on both counts), it is long past time for people to take much more personal responsibility for their own health and the health of others.

Two cycles ago, in 2019, this energy was in place at the time of the enthronement ceremony for Emperor Naruhito, the 126th Emperor of Japan, which was seen as a supreme act of “personal authority” as he officially proclaimed his own enthronement, with dignitaries from over 190 countries and international organizations in attendance for the elaborate event.

One cycle before that it was the pomp and ceremony of Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding at Windsor Castle that drew the attention of millions.

In 2015 this was the energy in place when Iran and six world nations brought an end to a 12-year stand-off when they reached an historic agreement to place strict restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program and enable sanctions against Iran to be lifted. One cycle after that, early in 2016, this energy brought the opening of the Nuclear Security Summit that was attended by world leaders from more than 50 countries and 4 international organizations (but boycotted by Putin), in the fourth and final nuclear summit initiated by President Obama.

Six cycles ago (in December of 2016) this was in place when US intelligence agencies
announced that they had overwhelming evidence that Russian operatives linked to the Kremlin were behind the hacking of the presidential election that had just taken place.

4 Kib’ (Mar. 25th) – a “defining” day associated with the restoration of order; often a “getting down to business” type of force, coinciding at this time with the Feast of the Annunciation, observed throughout Christianity.

This was the energy influence in place in 1947 when the UN passed a resolution to divide Palestine into Arab and Jewish states, with Jerusalem as an internationalized city; in 1979 this was the influence in place when the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty was signed after intense negotiations the year before (the 1978 Camp David Accords).

This is the Maya birth energy of actor/director Hal Holbrook who so convincingly transformed himself into the role of Mark Twain in one-man stage show performances that ran for more than 60 years. He died near the end of January this year, just 3 ½ weeks before his 96th birthday.

5 Kab’an (Mar. 26th) – a “pivotal” type of energy associated with evolutionary movement, coinciding at this time with the beginning of the short Maya month known as the Wayeb’, the first of five transitional days leading up to the Maya New Year. Traditionally it was thought that the world was “suspended” during this liminal period. Some considered this to be a “dangerous” period, or a time to be particularly cautious, due to the “uncertainty” of these Wayeb’ forces. Some found ways to carry or surround themselves with extra protection, and some saw these as transitional days or “days of rest”, a good time to fast, meditate, and purify to eliminate toxins and cleanse one’s spirit in order to prepare for the new year.

In general this is a good time for “cleansing” and for shedding the “burdens” of the past in order to prepare for a new cycle. As it happens, this is also ovelapping at this time with a kind of transitional, “laying low” type of period in India known as Holashtak, which began on Mar. 21st, leading up to Holi on Mar. 28th

Meanwhile, in South Bali, it it wasn’t for the pandemic, in the village of Sesetan young people traditionally would be taking part in the Omed-omedan, the Bali Kissing Festival, as part of their traditional new year celebrations. Not a good idea at this time, given that Indonesia has recorded well over a million cases of covid.

This is U.S. House of Representatives’ Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s 81st Gregorian birthday.

6 Etz’nab’ (Mar. 27th) – a “six directions”, “knife edge” type of energy often associated with “separation” that can often be quite attention-getting, coinciding at this time with Earth Hour, when households and businesses around the world are encouraged to switch off all non-essential lights for one hour, from 8:30-9:30 pm, as a sign of commitment to the planet.

This is the beginning (in the evening) of the Jewish celebration of Passover. This is a
celebration associated with a time in deep history when Moses was attempting to free the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. It refers to the idea of the angel of death “passing over” Jewish homes during a great plague, at a time when Egyptian soldiers were ordered to slay first borns. Ultimately the people were allowed to go free, and shortly thereafter came the exodus from Egypt through the miracle of the parting of the Red Sea as Moses and the people made their escape. So this is the story of a great plague and a monumental escape to freedom. During this current time, many can likely relate to this, and would welcome the opening up of some kind of “escape route” to enable them to flee from the pandemic.

Currently this day marks the Calendar Round return of two significant events from 1865. One was President Abraham Lincoln’s interment in Springfield, Illinois after a 3-week series of events that included his funeral train “tour” from Washington, D.C. to Springfield. The other important event at that time was the ending of all Confederate resistance east of the Mississippi River, as the Civil War was winding down. Both of those events took place on 6 Etz’nab’ 1 Wayeb’, exactly the energies in place at this time. Note also that the attempted assassination of President Gerald Ford occurred under the influence of 6 Etz’nab’ in 1975.

7 Kawak (Mar. 28th) – “self-generating storm”, an energy that could bring intense weather or potentially manifest as a “storm of compassion” or a “storm of passion” oriented around a cause, coinciding at this time with the Full Worm Moon [aka the Crow Comes Back Moon, the Strong Wind Moon, and the Paschal (Easter) Moon], and with Palm Sunday and the beginning of the Christian “Holy Week”.

The evening brings the beginning of India’s highly revered Holi festival. Sometimes referred to as a “festival of love” or “festival of colours”, Holi is a time when people get together to play with vibrant colours in the interest of fun, healing, fertility, and renewal, as they forget about resentments and bad feelings from the past and symbolically celebrate the triumph of good over evil. During this evening large bonfires will be lit across India to drive away evil spirits.

At this point it has been three 3 Calendar Rounds, exactly, since the Confederate Government in the US was offically dissolved in early May of 1865, prior to the final surrender of Confederate forces.

It has been two cycles since the funeral in Baltimore for the much loved Congressman and civil rights advocate Elijah Cummings. At that time eulogies were given by former presidents Clinton and Obama as well as by both Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi.

8 Ajaw (Mar. 29th) – “resurrection” of the sun and “enlightenment”, five cycles since the sun unleashed two powerful X-class solar flares, with the second being the most powerful in more than a decade, resulting in a “wide area of blackouts” over the sunlit side of Earth. At that time massive wildfires were raging across eight western states as well as in B.C.’s interior.

Currently India’s Holi festival will be in full swing at this time after the end of Holashtak and the burning of fires the evening before to drive away evil spirits, ending in the evening. This is the day when arguments are due to begin in the George Floyd-related murder trial in Minneapolis.

“Enclosed Field with Rising Sun” painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889. Public Domain via Wikimedia Commons

This is the Maya birth energy of Vincent van Gogh, who was a master of the use of sunlight in his paintings. He is the subject of the huge Imagine Van Gogh exhibition that just opened in Vancouver.

9 Imix (Mar. 30th) – “immortal” birth/the realm of all potential – a force that could have a far reaching influence, as was seen in 2015 when, under this influence, NASA released the first image of Earth from its Deep Space Climate Observatory satellite, showing Earth from one million miles away. This the final day of the Wayeb’, with the Maya New Year coming in the following day. In the U.S. this is National Doctors’ Day, in recognition of the contributions of physicians to individual lives and communities. By this time the total number of Covid-19 cases registered in the US will have surpassed 31 million, more than ten times the number of cases as were registered the last time this energy was in place, last summer. With the death toll already over 550,000 in that country, the strain on doctors and the medical community as a whole is almost unimaginable.

This is the 45th Gregorian anniversary of Palestinian Land Day which commemorates the events of March 30, 1976, when Israeli police shot and killed six Palestinian citizens and injured hundreds of others as they protested against the Israeli government’s expropriation of their land.

This is also the Maya birth energy of the “immortal” Aretha Franklin, whose life is being portrayed in a new National Geographic miniseries.

10 Ik’ (Mar. 31st) – “foundational wind/breath/spirit” – an energy highly aligned with Source and with things pertaining to the air, to communication, and to things of a spiritual nature, coinciding at this time with the “seating” of the Classical Maya New Year.

Guanyin, Buddhist Goddess of Mercy. Her birthday coincides with Maya day 10 Ik’ on Mar. 31st, aligned with Wind, Breath, and Spirit. Public Domain via Wikimedia Commons.

In China this is the birthday of Guanyin, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, the most revered of
Buddhist Bodhisattvas. Given the global challenges associated with the pandemic, this Goddess (sometimes depicted with “a thousand arms”) will surely be the recipient of millions of prayers at this time. Hopefully this Goddess of Infinite Compassion will be merciful enough to lend her support to the eradication of this contagion. A description of some of the legends associated with this deity can be found here:
https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/society/article/3016496/many-legends-guanyin-or-kwun-yum-goddess-mercy-revered-hong
It is also the International Transgender Day of Visibility.

In 1978 this was the energy in place at the conclusion of The Longest Walk, a peaceful transcontinental trek for Native American justice, as 30,000 supporters arrived in Washington D.C. This is also the Maya Calendar anniversary of the energy in place in 1962 when New York honoured Col. John Glenn with a huge ticker-tape parade after his historic first space flight aboard Friendship 7. In 2014 this was the energy in place at the time of the “opening for business” of One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the Western hemisphere.

11 Ak’b’al (April 1st) – “inspirational night” or “inspirational temple of mysteries”, a force often aligned with deep thought – or even “blackness”, but also a good day to enjoy the sanctuary of home or temple, or to give “deep thought” to something of an inspirational nature.

In 1895 this was the energy in place at the time of the world’s first public screening of a moving picture – the showing of 10 short films by Auguste and Louis Lumière using their “cinématographe” device that functioned as a camera, projector, and printer, all in one.

This is also Abraham Lincoln’s Maya birth energy, which would have been in place in 1865 just 5 days after his interment. The last time this energy was in place a statue of Jen Reid, a Black Lives Matter protester, was installed on the same plinth in Bristol as had previously held the statue of a 17th century UK slave trader, which had been pulled down a few weeks earlier.

The statue of the protester (shown near the top of this blog), created by artist Marc Quinn, was titled A Surge of Power, and although it was only allowed to remain in place for one day, it was a powerful statement relating to the critical need to address “the unacceptable problem of institutionalised and systemic racism that everyone has a duty to face up to” (from a joint statement by Quinn and Reid). It was interesting that this took place under the same energy influence as was in place when Lincoln was born. It also fits perfectly as an illustration of a significant “personal authority” event within a trecena that is so strongly aligned with that very idea.

12 K’an (April 2nd) – a “dedicated” type of energy often associated with youthful vitality and the joyful celebration of life’s bounties, coinciding at this time with Good Friday and with World Autism Awareness Day, with this year’s theme being “The Transition to Adulthood”

13 Chikchan (April 3rd) – “transformational lifeforce”; an intense and often impassioned energy, coinciding at this time with the beginning of a 3-day national shutdown in Italy. The last time this energy was in place, last July, the world lost Congressman John Lewis and the Rev. C.T. Vivian, both fierce warriors, both indefatigable icons of the civil rights movement. This time this energy coincides with the 53rd Gregorian anniversary of the day in 1968 when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech, in which he said

Something is happening . . . something is happening in our world . . .
only when it is dark enough can you see the stars

This is the Maya birth energy of the legendary Katherine Hepburn, who lived to be 96. It is also primatologist Jane Goodall’s 87th Gregorian birthday, and would have been Doris Day’s 99th Gregorian birthday.

When this energy was in place last summer Captain Tom Moore was knighted by Queen Elizabeth for raising over £32 million for the National Health Service charities in the UK.
