Maya Calendar Energies At Work In The World

Ramp leading to the cella, or imperial tomb in Rome, that had kept the ashes of emperors until the sack of Rome in 410. The Ak’b’al trecena was just beginning when that attack on the city took place. This photo is reminiscent of that Ak’b’al concept (darkness, sanctuary, deep mystery) and even conjures up images of the Ak’b’al hieroglyph (Photo credit: Daryl Mitchell, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan [CC BY-SA 2.0 via Wikimedia Commons]

It had been seen as “the eternal city” for hundreds of years, the centre of a mighty empire that must have seemed like it would endure forever, and yet – this city “which had taken the whole world was itself taken”. When St. Jerome wrote this in the early 5th century he was speaking of Rome after it was sacked by the Visigoths on a One Ak’b’al day during the summer of 410 AD.

Not only was this a day of darkness in the history of the Roman Empire but it seems there are many parallels to be drawn with regard to current times. Currently we are exactly paralleling the energies that were in place leading up to the fall of Rome.

Walt Whitman (born on One Ak’b’al), the greatly loved American poet whose 200th Gregorian birthday was commemorated at the end of May, foreshadowed this when he wrote:

Long, too long America,
Traveling roads all even and peaceful you learn’d from joys and prosperity only,
But now, ah now, to learn from crises of anguish, advancing, grappling with direst fate . . .
From Walt Whitman’s “Long, too long America”

And indeed, it has been this Ak’b’al trecena that has brought to the fore some of the deepest “crises of anguish” of the past few decades. What we are working with here is a time frame that is oriented around ideas such as “darkness”, ”mysteries”, and challenges associated with ethics and morality.

The Aztec saw the overseer of this period as Itzpapálotl, the Obsidian Butterfly, who sometimes appears as a seductress but more often is shown with a skeletal visage and knife tipped wings, representative of her role as a fearsome warrior on the search for truth. Emblematic of the struggles of the soul as it strives to overcome the trials and tribulations of life, this deity was often associated with the subconscious, with moral and ethical issues, and with the sacrifices that often must be made in order to navigate through the earthly realm. And that is what this trecena often “stirs up”, often exposing a cauldron of issues that need to be addressed.

And certainly that is what happened during the last appearance of this energy frame when many critical issues associated with morality and ethics were on full display, particularly during the Bill Cosby trial and during the Kavanaugh hearings related to the US Supreme Court nomination, with the Ford vs. Kavanaugh hearing referred to as a “searing” moment, a “teaching” moment for democracy, a defining moment or “a moment of reckoning” in the #MeToo movement that fomented a huge backlash from thousands of people across the nation, including the law society and hundreds of lawyers.

The energies of this trecena were also certainly in play in the order given to the U.S. by the International Court of Justice to ease the sanctions that were imposed on Iran after abandoning a nuclear deal in May of last year, and in the release of several explosive books and articles related to corruption in the Trump organization and the White House.

As could be so clearly seen at that time, this is a time frame that often brings things that have been “long festering” to a head, with significant consequences. Going all the way back to the Roman Empire we find that both the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BC and the sack of Rome in 410 AD took place under the influence of One Ak’b’al. That assassination, involving as many as sixty co-conspirators, has been seen historically as a turning point in “the crisis of the Roman Republic”, a crisis that triggered a civil war. Fast forward to 1972 and we find that the Watergate “incident” also took place under this influence, with the arrest of the Watergate burglars, which eventually led to the impeachment of President Nixon. Two years after that burglary this same Ak’b’al trecena brought forth Nixon’s resignation.

The fates of many nations, including both the U.S. and France, have been shaped by this time frame, with the ninth day being consequential for these two in particular. This was the energy frame in place in the spring of 1775 when Paul Revere made his midnight ride, with “the shot heard ‘round the world” kicking off the American Revolution. One cycle later one third of New York burned to the ground. Then, in 1789, precisely 20 Tzolk’in cycles after the first battle of the American Revolution, the people of Paris said “enough” and stormed the Bastille, under the influence of that same ninth day. And then there was the “Global Market meltdown” during this trecena in 2008.

One of the key aspects of this energy sequence is its emphasis on shedding light on “hidden secrets”, particularly as they relate to morality and ethics. This can certainly be seen in the exposing of the Watergate machinations in the early 1970’s, and then again in 2010 by the exposing (by WikiLeaks) of a hidden cache of more than 250,000 diplomatic cables and classified documents pertaining to correspondence between U.S. diplomats and their allies and partners around the world. Two years after that this trecena saw tens of thousands of Occupy Wall Street activists clash with police in protest demonstrations across the U.S. and around the world as people vented their frustrations concerning austerity measures, tax hikes, and high unemployment. And then there were the ominous and frightening events that took place in Washington during this trecena in the spring of 2017, with massive protest marches taking place throughout the trecena both in the U.S. and in many other parts of the world.

So where are we now – and what will be exposed at this time? It appears that one of the most obvious “echoes” carrying over from the last appearance of this time frame is the abortion issue in the U.S. as many Republican controlled states now seem to be “jockeying for position” to be the first to make abortion illegal. By shutting down clinics they are trying to force the Supreme Court to re-examine the 1973 Rowe vs Wade ruling that protects women’s rights. And since it is now one cycle since key members of Congress disregarded the will of the people and voted to install Kavanaugh as a Supreme Court judge, it is highly likely that there could be some strong “echoing” of this issue at this time.

Very definitely there will be a lot of emphasis placed on how to deal with the issue of people defying congressional subpoenas, as this trecena begins with the House poised to hold several key people in contempt of Congress, which could be the first of many measures taken to deal with the withholding of information by the White House. Also pending at this time is the possible long-awaited release of Trump-related tax information, as several organizations have been cleared to provide Congress with pertinent documents.

But it’s not just the U.S. that is under pressure to deal with systemic issues. In the Sudan millions of people took part in a general strike over the past couple of days, shutting down city centres across that country as people join together to force the resignation of military leaders and bring the governance of the country back into the hands of the people. In Kazahstan people are working to end the three decade rule of the current leader, and in Hong Kong hundreds of thousands have taken to the streets over the past couple of days to protest against a Bejing imposed extradition bill. Undoubtedly there is also much upset in Iran as Tehran has just closed 547 restaurants for not observing “Islamic principles”, which could well set the stage for some sort of rebellion against dogmatism. And then there is the Venezuela crisis . . . and the situation in Brazil . . . and climate change . . .

Note that as much as the Ak’b’al trecena does tend to place attention on the exposing of deep secrets and dealing with such issues, Ak’b’al also translates as “House”, “Temple” or “Sanctuary”, and so can provide a sense of relief as issues actually DO get resolved. Note also that it can sometimes take more than one cycle to get to the resolution, but eventually it does get there. It provides opportunities to dig things up from the “darkness” of the depths, to bring them into the light where things can be seen and dealt with. Key points within this period include a National Day of Action on June 15th, Summer solstice and all its related activities on the 21st, and the auspicious Ganga Dussehra festival in India, a good place to go for many to “wash away” issues from the past.

As always, this trecena can provide important opportunities for strong questioning, deep soul-searching, and even “dreaming”. A really good time to take heed of Walt Whitman’s advice to “Keep your face always toward the sunshine – and shadows will fall behind you.”

A good way to do that would be to embrace summer on the solstice and rock-on with Carlos Santana in Phoenix as he starts his tour towards the end of this trecena. Here are the energies that will come into play:

Walt Whitman, born on One Ak’b’al in 1819. Public Domain via Wikimedia Commons

1 Ak’b’al (June 11th) – the “initiation” of “darkness” (or “contemplation”), in association with deep mysteries, coinciding at this time with Walt Whitman’s Maya birthday and with World Pet Memorial Day – a good time to remember, honour and celebrate the lives of the remarkable beings who share their lives with humans.

Release date for CNN chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta’s new book titled  The Enemy of the People: A Dangerous Time to Tell the Truth in America, in which he reveals that Trump’s attack on the media began as “an act” meant to whip up anger and garner support for himself but has become a “fierce, frightening, relentless attack on the media”.

On this day the full House of Representatives in the US will hold a vote over legal action to enforce subpoenas that would require former WH counsel Don McGahn to cooperate or be held in contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate with investigations. At the same time they are working through a deal that may or may not hold William Barr accountable in the same way, depending on the extent to which the DoJ complies with subpoena requests.

Intriguingly, this was the energy in place last September on the first day of hearings in the Bill Cosby trial (Cosby was sentenced the next day). On that same day students and faculty at Yale Law School (more than 300 demonstrators dressed in black) staged a silent sit-in to protest against Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination as a Supreme Court justice and to support the women who had accused him of sexual misconduct.

At the same time a majority of law school faculty members signed an open letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee calling for a full investigation into the accusations against him. This was part of a nationwide #BelieveSurvivors walkout, where people across the country wore black and walked out of homes, workplaces, and classrooms in a “Moment of Solidarity” to support Dr. Blasey Ford and call for Kavanaugh to withdraw his nomination.

In 1972 this same energy was in place in the early morning when the Watergate burglars were arrested, which ultimately led to the impeachment of President Nixon.

2 K’an (June 12th) – a dynamic type of energy often aligned with new possibilities, correlating at this time with the start of the auspicious Ganga Dussehra festival in India, at which time it is said that one can get salvation from sins or achieve Moksha (liberation) by taking a dip in the sacred Ganga River, which is seen as the incarnation of the Goddess Ganga. (Doing a purification ritual in conjunction with some other river is an alternative for those who can’t get to the Ganga.)  This is the day when the House Intelligence committee will begin public hearings on counterintelligence implications of the Mueller report. Coincidently this is also Russia Day, which has been celebrated annually since 1991.

Marvin Kalb’s Enemy of the People: Trump’s War on the Press, the New McCarthyism, and the Threat to American Democracy was released under this influence during its last appearance, on the same day as Bill Cosby was sentenced to state prison for 3-10 years for being a “sexually violent predator”, becoming the first celebrity of the #MeToo era to go to prison.

3 Chikchan (June 12th) – “the activation of lifeforce”; an important Burner Day oriented around the idea of “announcing the fire”, the type of energy that can sometimes “charge” people to take action, particularly if pressing issues suggest the need for consciousness raising. At this time this coincides with St. Anthony’s Feast Day, a popular Catholic celebration of a saint sometimes known as the Wonder-worker, the patron saint for the recovery of lost things. Also known as the marriage saint, he has been recognized in legends as facilitating reconciliations. Celebrations in his honour will be held in many places worldwide at this time

Forty-five years ago this was the energy in place when President Nixon gave his resignation address.

4 Kimi (June 13th) – a “defining” force associated with “absolute foundations” representative of the sun in combination with “death” or the point at which “all is revealed” so that regeneration can begin, on the day when a status report is due related to the possible sentencing of former National Security advisor Mike Flynn, precisely one cycle after the infamous Ford vs. Kavanaugh hearing in front of the Senate Judicial Committee in Washington. At that time the American Bar Association called on the Senate Judiciary Committee, in a strongly worded letter, to halt the consideration of Kavanaugh until an FBI investigation was done (something that the Judiciary committee ignored).

Fifteen cycles since that dark day in 2008, during the continuing financial panic worldwide, when the situation was referred to as the “worst financial crisis since the 1930’s”. Four cycles since a number of senior Republicans signed an open letter declaring that Trump would put the national security and well-being of the U.S. at risk. And . . . 63 cycles since that infamous day in the summer of 1974 when President Nixon stepped down after the release of the proof of his covert involvement in the Watergate scandal.

This is National Flag Day in the U.S., on the 242nd anniversary of the adoption of the U.S. flag and with the start of Honor America Days, the 21 days from Flag Day through to Independence day. Maya birth energy of photographer James Balog, whose extraordinary images of disintegrating glaciers have provided some of the most dramatic evidence of world climate change.

5 Manik’ (June 15th) – a “blessing” or “precision” type of energy associated with reciprocity, coinciding at this time with a National Day of Action – a nationwide call for an impeachment inquiry against Trump, with events scheduled to take place in more than 100 cities and towns across the US. A National Day of Action June 15th

This is the day of the Rain festival in China, which involves ceremonies invoking dragons to seek “just the right quantity” of rain. In Taiwan this day includes the observance of Kuan Kung’s birthday. Aka Guan Gong, he was a kind of benefic warlord known as a great and righteous protector, able to deflect all negative energy. He was seen as a defender of the people so perhaps he can be invoked to help with the efforts being put forth by citizens in the US on this National Day of Action.

6 Lamat (June 16th) – a “structuring” type of energy associated with the heralding of new ideas, coinciding at this time with Father’s Day and a conjunction of the Full Moon with Jupiter. In 2015 it was June 16th when Trump announced his candidacy and Michael Cohen began working on the Trump campaign, including attempting to coverup Trump’s affairs with 2 women, “with the intent to influence the 2016 pres. election”, acting “in coordination with and at the direction of” Trump. One cycle since the huge “historic” demonstrations in Brazil on 6 Lamat last fall to protest against far right presidential frontrunner Jair Bolsonaro ahead of the elections, on the same day as a 10-year old migrant girl from El Salvador died while detained by the US government at the border.

7 Muluk (June 17th) – a “self-generating”, pivotal, shape-shifting type of energy associated with water, coinciding at this time with the Full Strawberry Moon (or Rose Moon), with Jupiter still close by, on the opening of the UN’s Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC) conference in Bonn, Germany. In 1968 Senator Robert F. Kennedy announced his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination under this influence.

8 Ok (June 18th) – a “double sun” type of force, symbolic of the “resurrection of love, guidance, and loyalty”, coinciding with a conjunction of the Moon and Saturn as well as a conjunction of Mercury and Mars, on the Calendar Round anniversary of the 8 Ok 18 Sotz’ energy that was in place at the time of Canada’s centennial in 1967 when Chief Dan George gave a famous speech in which he said:

In the long hundred years since the white man came, I have seen my freedom disappear like the salmon going mysteriously out to sea. The white man’s strange customs, which I do not understand, pressed down upon me until I could no longer breathe. When I fought to protect my land and my home, I was called a savage. When I neither understood nor welcomed this way of life, I was called lazy. When I tried to rule my people, I was stripped of my authority.

O Canada, how can I celebrate with you this centenary, this hundred years? Shall I thank you for the reserves that are left me of my beautiful forests? For the canned fish of my rivers? For the loss of my pride and authority, even among my own people?

Four years later he received the Order of Canada.

This is the 100th birthday of Gordon Smith, one of Canada’s most beloved artists, who still paints every day and still regularly exhibits his art.

9 Chuwen (June 19th) “outwardly projecting creativity”, on the last day of the Maya month Sotz’, which could make this quite an intense energy combination, in place at this time in conjunction with Juneteenth, known as African American Emancipation Day, as the announcement of the abolition of slavery in the US was on June 19th in 1865.

Nine Chuwen was the energy in place in 1775 at the start of the American Revolution and in 1789 when the Bastille was stormed in Paris, marking the beginning of the French Revolution. In January 2013 this energy was in place when U.S. President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden were sworn-in for the second time.

One cycle ago (early last October) this highly consequential “9 Monkey” energy coincided with the release of Stormy Daniels’ Full Disclosure book, a tell-all about her relationship with Trump, as well as the release of Michael Lewis’s The Fifth Risk, which highlights the extraordinarily inept transition process associated with the 2016 U.S. election and disfunctional state of so many government departments ever since. On this day hundreds of US law professors began urging the Senate to reject Kavanaugh’s supreme court nomination, and the New York Times published an explosive report the revealed that Trump was bankrolled (in multiple ways) by his father and that he spent much of the 1990’s participating in dubious tax evasion schemes. This was also the day when journalist Jamal Khashoggi was murdered in the Saudi consultate in Istanbul.

10 Eb’ (June 20th) – “foundational animating vitality”, coinciding at this time with the U.N.’s World Refugee Day and National American Eagle Day. On the last appearance of this energy the New York Times published a letter signed by over 2400 law professors that said that Kavanaugh was not fit to sit on the Supreme Court, at the same time as some 300 Stop Kavanaugh vigils took place across the country, attended by thousands nationwide, including a huge rally in front of the Supreme Court in Washington D.C., as they gave impassioned speeches and demanded that senators reject his nomination (but again these demands were disregarded).

11 B’en (June 21st) – “inspirational personal authority”, coinciding at this time with Summer Solstice, National Indigenous Peoples Day, the International Day of Yoga, Take Your Dog to Work day, the start of the 3-day Swamp Magic Fest in New Orleans (celebrating its 301st year of magic), and the kick-off of The Rolling Stones’ No Filter North American tour, at Soldier Field in Chicago.

In 2015 hundreds of thousands of people marched under this influence in more than 2500 demonstrations worldwide in one of the largest ever days of protest to call for action to deal with climate change, on the eve of the UN Climate Change conference.

12 Ix (June 22nd) – a “gathering together” type of energy oriented around earth forces, deep mysteries, and the power of transformation. A great time to join Carlos Santana as he launches his 20th anniversary “Supernatural Now” tour, starting in Phoenix. In 1960 this was the energy in place at the time of the 9.5 Great Chilean earthquake, the largest of the 20th century.

13 Men (June 23rd) – transformational high vision; a high-energy type of force that can be world-shaping, as was in place in 2015 at the time of the largest ever gathering of world leaders. Two cycles ago, in January of 2018, this energy started the process of the shut down of the US government, the first modern government shutdown with both Congress and the White House controlled by the same party. One cycle since the final US Senate vote to advance Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, despite an AVALANCHE of opposition.
